List of initiatives / actions of interest to FIRE
This page lists the various European and international initiatives of interest to FIRE, i.e. either with which FIRE shall interact one way or another, or to monitor in case there is something of interest to FIRE. It also includes some coordination or support actions of interest. The main objectives of FIRE interaction with other initiatives are to promote and give visibility to FIRE facilities and FIRE research projects to the stakeholders involved in the initiatives, and to increase the usage of FIRE facilities by research projects supported by the initiative or by the community of this initiative at large, at European and at international level.
Objectives also include enlarging and strengthening the FIRE community and the FIRE facilities offer. Although the objectives highlighted in the previous section can also be addressed through participation in events organized by these initiatives, these two objectives can be achieved only by interacting directly with the people in charge of the initiatives.
FIA
Brief description / Web site
The Future Internet Assembly (FIA) was created in March 2008 by the European Commission and the Member States, with support from many research projects and the related European Technology Platforms eMobility, NEM, ISI and EPoSS, in order to coordinate the activities towards a coordinated European approach to the Future Internet.
http://www.future-internet.eu/
Reason for interaction / Objectives of interaction
FIRE is one of the constituencies (clusters) of the FIA. The objective is to make FIRE projects and especially the facilities better known to the FIA community in order to increase its visibility and to promote the usage of the FIRE facilities by FI projects and organisations.
Means of interaction
FIRE Cluster within FIA;
Organisation of FIRE sessions at FIA Events;
Participation in other FI cluster meetings/events;
FI portal (Eurescom);
FIA book
Proposal for next steps
FIRE(Works) has been involved in the organisation of FIA and the FIA events from their inception. FIREStation will follow up in these footsteps.
FI PPP
Brief description / Web site
The Future Internet Public-Private Partnership (FI PPP) is a 300 M€ initiative supporting FP7 research projects embedded in the ICT Work Programme 2011-2012. The aim is to set up an Internet infrastructure which can be efficiently used by several large-scale trial projects from application sectors such as transport, health and energy.
http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/activities/foi/lead/fippp/index_en.htm
Reason for interaction / Objectives of interaction
FI PPP projects shall be encouraged to use FIRE facilities
Means of interaction
Interaction between FIRESTATION (representing FIRE) and projects from Objective FI.ICT-2011.1.9 Capacity Building and Infrastructure Support (refers explicitly to FIRE), and to a second extend with the projects from Objective FI.ICT-2011.1.8 Use Case scenarios and early trials
Proposal for next steps
The projects (including the CSAs) shall start around mid-2011; see then whether setting up a direct interaction with the CSA on “Capacity Building & Infrastructure”, and/or a direct interaction with the CSA on “Programme Facilitation & Support” or with some of the IPs and STREPs makes sense once they have started
EFIA
Brief description / Web site
The European Future Internet Alliance (merged EFII and FIRA) intends to establish one unique platform that provides a single point of access for all stakeholders in the European Future Internet domain. This includes industry (ICT and sectors), academia, SMEs, European Commission representatives, National Research authorities and other national and transnational technology "bodies".
http://www.future-internet.eu/news/view/article/efii-fira-evolution.html
http://initiative.future-internet.eu/
Reason for interaction / Objectives of interaction
The main objective of EFIA seems to be the submission of FI PPP projects; it remains to be seen what this initiative will become once FI PPP projects are started. Therefore the reason and objectives for an interaction with EFII shall be investigated later.
Means of interaction
n/a at this stage.
Proposals for next steps
Investigate again 6 months after the FI PPP projects have started whether interaction is required.
EX-FI
Brief description / Web site
The EX-FI Support Action (Expanding the European Future Internet Community) is a short project (May 2010 - April 2011) whose main objective is to support industry prepare the FI PPP projects. It will then be somewhat replaced with the CSA on “Programme Facilitation and Support” planned in the FI PPP.
http://initiative.future-internet.eu/home/supported-by-ex-fi-fp7-support-action-project.html
Reason for interaction / Objectives of interaction

Means of interaction
Direct contact between EX-FI and FIRESTATION (representing FIRE).
Proposal for next steps
The projects (including the CSAs) shall start around mid-2011; see then whether setting up a direct interaction with the CSA on “Capacity Building & Infrastructure”, and/or a direct interaction with the CSA on “Programme Facilitation & Support” or with some of the IPs and STREPs makes sense once they have started.
FIF
Brief description / Web site
The Future Internet Forum (FIF) was created end of 2008 by the European Commission further to a request from the Member States, to promote the interest of the Member and Associated States in a European approach to Future Internet. The FIF represents somewhat the public side and EFII and FIRA the industry side.
http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/activities/foi/lead/fif/index_en.htm
Reason for interaction / Objectives of interaction
FIF involves most representatives from Member States who follow what is going on around Future Internet; it is important to make sure that FIRE is one of the main constituencies of FI in the mind of the FIF members.
Means of interaction
Direct interaction between FIRESTATION (representing FIRE) and the FIF shall be set up, maybe through the CEFIMS support action which is currently under way.
Proposal for next steps
Contact the FIF representatives and/or the CSA in charge; investigate what could be done to promote FIRE and possibly set-up interactions with FI initiatives and test facilities at national level.

Means of interaction
Direct interaction between FIRESTATION (representing FIRE) and the Celtic Core Group or the Celtic Office to promote the usage of test facilities in Celtic research projects and also to invite private or national facilities identified by Celtic Core Group members to join or set up interactions with the FIRE community; participation of FIRE (FIRESTATION and FIRE projects) in Celtic events to promote FIRE visibility and the usage of FIRE facilities.
Proposal for next steps
FIRESTATION shall contact the Celtic Office in order to define what could be done jointly.
ITEA2
Brief description / Web site
ITEA 2 is a EUREKA cluster and a strategic pan-European programme for advanced pre-competitive R&D in software for Software-intensive Systems and Services (SiS).
http://www.itea2.org/
Reason for interaction / Objectives of interaction

Reason for interaction / Objectives of interaction
ISTAG is quite influential in defining priorities of the next ICT work programmes, and will certainly have a say in the definition of priorities for FP8. Interaction with some influential members of ISTAG to promote FIRE projects and facilities could help find an appropriate place and budget in FP8 for FIRE.
Means of interaction
Unofficial interactions with some of the ISTAG members? Interaction with the EC representatives?
Proposal for next steps
Investigate who from FIRESTATION (and/or the FIRE projects?) could interact with ISTAG members from industry, academia and the EC and promote FIRE. The list of ISTAG member is available at http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/istag/membership-2010-12_en.html.

http://www.geni.net/
Reason for interaction / Objectives of interaction
The objectives of GENI are to a great extent similar to FIRE, however, the approach and structure differ somewhat. Especially project level cooperation is encouraged for effective and best use of resources, best serving the global customers of experimental platforms. FIRESTATION can mediate this interaction and streamline efforts.
Means of interaction
Interaction with GENI Office participation at GENI Engineering Conferences in order to follow GENI progress, catalyse and coordinate project(s)2project(s) cooperation, identify common design challenges and work on them ultimately with common trials.
Proposal for next steps
